Sher Ali Khan is a journalist working for the Express Tribune covering music and culture. Prior to working at the Tribune, Sher Ali worked at the Friday Times as a Current Affairs and Features reporter, directly reporting to Raza Rumi. He has also contributed extensively to Daily Times and Viewpoint online as a freelance columnist.
Sher Ali is deeply involved in the local music scene. He has interviewed major musical personalities, such as Salman Ahmed, Ali Azmat, Zeb and Haniya, Mark LeVine, Arieb Azhar, Syed Farhad Humayun and a host of other artists. He has extensively researched Pakistan’s gospel music tradition, Sachal Studios, underground rock music, as well as exploring the world of classical music. He was solely responsible for breaking the story on the release of the independent film “Kaptaan”, and covered the break-up of Jal in an exclusive interview with Farhan Saeed.
Initially starting out with the tribune, he was assigned to the Lahore government beat which explored the technical and administrative workings of the city government in Lahore. Simultaneously, he was assigned to the Governor beat and closely monitored the Late governor Salmaan Taseer as event unfolded leading up to his passing.Later, he would cover Public Health as well and is received national coverage for his coverage during the Doctor’s Strike in Spring 2011.
Born and raised in Thousand Oaks, California, Sher Ali has been involved in public speaking. While attending UC Riverside, as the President of the Pakistani Student Association and Executive Outreach Director for Amnesty International, he received several accolades and recognitions from the local and campus community. He was also Staff reporter for the university newspaper Highlander news, covering sports, music and politics.
Sher Ali was invited to an education panel on Pakistan at UC Irvine, which also included Salman Ahmed, Mark LeVine and Stanley Wolpert as invitees. He was a regular guest on the local Shalimar Radio station, where he was selected as Best Young Pakistani Contributor and was also awarded the Young Pakistani Achievement Award 2009.
In his spare time, Sher Ali enjoys reading and is closely associated with the So-Cal indie punk scene, having attended over 40 shows in the area so far.
